Overview of Al-Anon/Alateen District Function
The District is a geographical section of an Area that is comprised of a number of individual group meetings that are located relatively close to one another. Group Representatives (GR) attend District Meetings to discuss business matters and share their individual group meeting experiences with each other.
The Group Representative (GR) is an Al-Anon/Alateen member who represents an individual group meeting at the District meeting where problems are discussed and information is exchanged. The GR also attends the Area Assembly meetings where the GR has a voice and vote on behalf of the individual group meeting that the GR represents.
The District Representative(DR) is elected by the GRs from among the GRs of the District. The DR chairs District meetings, represents the individual group meetings in their District at Area World Service Committee (AWSC) meetings, and serves as a source of information for the individual group meetings.
The Area is made up of all the Districts in a state or a province and each Area is represented by one World Service Delegate at the annual World Service Conference (WSC).
Area Assembly: The Area Assembly is composed of all the GRs in the area who convenes at least one or two times a year, or at a minimum of once every three years to elect a World Service Delegate and other Assembly officers.
Area World Service Committee (AWSC): consists of the officers of the Assembly, District Representatives, Coordinators, and Al-Anon Information Service (AIS) Liaison (Intergroup) members. They meet between Assemblies to plan the Assembly agenda and deal with other Area business as needed.
World Service Delegate is an Al-Anon/Alateen member selected at the Area Assembly to represent all the individual group meetings in each Area at the annual World Service Conference.
The World Service Delegate is the primary source, communication, and information link between the individual group meetings and the World Service Office (WSO).
The World Service Conference (WSC) is the permanent body for the expression of the conscience of the Al-Anon/Alateen fellowship. It has an annual meeting with World Service Delegates from each Assembly Area in the United States and Canada, the Trustees of Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc., the Chairpersons and WSO staff of all selected committees, and the members of the Executive Committee. Representatives outside United States and Canada may participate but may not vote.
The World Service Office (WSO) is the principal service center who renders services to the individual group meetings within the United States and Canada; the General Services Office (GSO) renders services to the individual group meetings outside the United States and Canada. WSO is also known as the Al-Anon Family Group (AFG) Headquarters, Inc. and is composed of executives, staff members, and standing committees who are supervised by the Board of Trustees and its Execute Committee. WSO serves as a clearinghouse that provides services to the fellowships and spreads the Al-Anon message worldwide.
There is a continuous chain of communication that flow information between the individual group meetings, Districts, Area Assemblies, World Service Conference (WSC) and the World Service Office (WSO). When changes and decisions are made at WSC and WSO the same communication chain carries the information back from the World Service Delegate, to the Area Assembly, to the District Representative, to the Group Representative, and to the individual group members.
